Customizable Business Capability Models

What are customizable business capability models and why are they invaluable in accelerating business architecture? In recent years, in the world of enterprise architecture and modeling, the disciplines of business architecture and business capability models have become the latest buzzwords for business IT alignment and linking execution to strategy.

A business capability map or a business capability model is capturing “What” a business does and has the ability to do. A well-constructed, hierarchically decomposed business capability model provides a structural basis to understand an enterprise in its elemental building blocks.

Hitherto, building a business capability map meant endless meetings, innumerable iterations on the whiteboard, a lot of caffeine, and frayed tempers. Endless arguments ensue about what is a business capability and what is a process? Whether to use nouns, noun-verbs, or something else. How many level 1 capabilities are enough, and politicking about elevating every capability to level 1, as though a lower level diminishes the importance. Last but not the least, in all the intellectual brainstorming, many a time, the teams miss the forest for the trees. And often, miss out on some key differentiating capabilities as the focus is on filling the capability modeling structural jigsaw puzzle.

After all this boiling the ocean, many realize that there is not that much difference between various firms in the basic set of capabilities, particularly horizontal capabilities. Of course, there may 20% of the business capability set that is different, but about 80% is similar. So, that begs the question: Why spend 90% of your time on capabilities that are similar to other peers, and not focus all the attention on unique differentiating business capabilities – whether in spirit, structure, emphasis or execution?

Instead of starting from scratch, here is an idea – Customizable business capability models! How about taking a customizable business capability model or a straw/proforma model and then customize to an enterprise’s needs? This way, teams can avoid the blank slate syndrome and the capability conceptualization fatigue. And miss out on structure and depth while focusing on the breadth.
