State of Play 2026: iPaaS and Enterprise Integration

Salesforce now owns MuleSoft and Informatica, IBM owns webMethods, and MuleSoft, Boomi and Workato now connect AI agents to integrations through MCP. Where the market stands in 2026, how each platform is priced, and what retiring BizTalk or SAP Process Orchestration requires.

Published October 26, 2026

An integration platform as a service (iPaaS) is a set of cloud-based tools for connecting applications, systems and data across IT environments, whether services run in the cloud or on premises. It supplies prebuilt connectors, templates, APIs and business logic. Many iPaaS products offer low-code or no-code drag-and-drop tools. Teams monitor the integrations through dashboards, alerts and logs.

Where the market stands

IBM completed its acquisition of webMethods and StreamSets from Software AG on July 1, 2024. At IBM Think 2025, IBM announced IBM webMethods Hybrid Integration, generally available from June 16, 2025. It covers APIs, applications, events, files, B2B/EDI and mainframe data in one platform.

On May 8, 2024, Boomi announced the acquisition of APIIDA's federated API management business and of API management assets from Cloud Software Group, the former Mashery product. On December 17, 2024, Boomi announced an agreement to acquire Rivery, a data integration company. Boomi says it acquired Rivery in December 2024 and now sells it as Boomi Data Integration.

Salesforce agreed to buy Informatica on May 27, 2025, for about $8 billion in equity value, net of its existing stake, or $25 a share in cash. The deal closed on November 18, 2025. Salesforce says Informatica brings catalog, integration, governance, quality, privacy, metadata management and master data management services. Salesforce has owned MuleSoft since May 2, 2018.

Integration for AI agents

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standard protocol for connecting AI models to tools, data and applications. On December 9, 2025, the Linux Foundation formed the Agentic AI Foundation, with MCP among its founding projects. MuleSoft, Boomi and Workato each support MCP.

  • MuleSoft. On September 25, 2025, Salesforce announced MuleSoft Agent Fabric, a single place to register, orchestrate, govern and observe AI agents. Its agent governance, through Flex Gateway for MCP and Agent2Agent (A2A), was available at launch. The MuleSoft Platform MCP Server, released on May 28, 2026, supports service discovery, policy enforcement and traffic monitoring.
  • Boomi. On May 14, 2025, Boomi made Agentstudio generally available and announced plans for native MCP support across its platform and a new MCP gateway for tool aggregation and discovery. Boomi's documentation now says its platform supports MCP. Running MCP servers inside a Boomi runtime is in Tech Preview.
  • Workato. Workato's prebuilt MCP servers, announced in February 2026, use OAuth 2.0 user authorization, so agents act on behalf of authenticated users rather than shared service accounts. Workato says every agent action is logged.

An agent that can trigger integrations raises the stakes on access control. Decide which flows an agent may call, under whose identity, and where its actions are logged, before the first agent goes live.

Three kinds of platform

The three groups below are this edition's way of sorting the market, not the vendors' own categories. Decide which one matches the people who will build your integrations.

  • Enterprise integration suites for central integration teams: API-led design, B2B/EDI, hybrid runtimes and central governance.
  • Business-user automation platforms, where analysts build workflows on a low-code canvas or recipe.
  • Embedded and SaaS-centric platforms, packaged around one application ecosystem or embedded in a software vendor's own product.

Microsoft and Google sell integration services billed through their own clouds: Azure Logic Apps and Google Cloud Application Integration.

How each platform is priced

There is no shared pricing unit. Prices below are list prices as published. Price each shortlisted platform against your own flow count, message volume and connector mix.

  • MuleSoft. On CloudHub, vCore pricing is based on the peak virtual cores allocated to active production application workers. For some customers on its US control plane, MuleSoft also offers packages that allot Mule flows, Mule messages and data throughput.
  • Boomi. Pay-As-You-Go costs $99 a month plus usage, billed monthly, with no contract. Subscriptions come in five Integration editions, from Standard to Enterprise Plus, with no published prices.
  • Workato. Usage is measured in tasks. A task is one action step a recipe executes. Triggers and control-flow steps do not count, each loop iteration counts, and AI steps count as more than one task. Workato's pricing pages list no prices.
  • Informatica. Informatica Processing Units (IPUs) are consumed across its cloud services. Customers commit monthly or for rolling 12-month terms, and per-unit pricing falls as consumption rises.
  • IBM webMethods Hybrid Integration. Transaction-based consumption pricing.
  • Celigo. Priced by endpoints and flows, not tasks, data volume or vCores, in Standard, Professional and Enterprise editions. Enterprise includes unlimited endpoints. The pricing page lists no prices.
  • Azure Logic Apps. On the Consumption plan in East US, the first 4,000 built-in actions are free, then each costs $0.000025. Standard connector calls cost $0.000125 each and enterprise connector calls $0.001. The Standard plan bills $0.1997 per vCPU hour and $0.0143 per GiB of memory per hour.
  • Google Cloud Application Integration. Pay-as-you-go costs $0.50 per 1,000 executions. Connection nodes cost $0.35 an hour for Google services, after the first two free, and $0.70 an hour for third-party applications. Data processed costs $10 per GiB after 20 GiB free each month. A subscription plan, with no published price, includes 24 million integration calls a year and 50 connection units.
  • Zapier. Plans are priced by tasks a month. The Free plan includes 100 tasks. Professional starts at $19.99 a month for 750 tasks and Team at $69 a month for 2,000 tasks, both billed annually.

Legacy platforms reaching end of support

  • Microsoft BizTalk Server. Microsoft says BizTalk Server 2020 is the final release. It expects sales of BizTalk Server 2020 and Host Integration Server 2020 to end on March 31, 2027. Microsoft's lifecycle page lists mainstream support ending in April 2028 and extended support in April 2030. Microsoft plans an optional, paid extended-mainstream support offering through April 10, 2030, and recommends migrating to Azure Logic Apps Standard or Azure Logic Apps Hybrid. Logic Apps Standard does not support IBM SNA, so workloads that depend on it must move to Host Integration Server 2028.
  • SAP Process Orchestration. SAP gives the end of maintenance for SAP Process Orchestration as the main reason to move to SAP Integration Suite. SAP Process Orchestration 7.5 follows SAP NetWeaver 7.5: mainstream maintenance until the end of 2027, with optional extended maintenance until the end of 2030.

Microsoft says BizTalk capabilities its Logic Apps Migration Agent excludes may need architectural redesign or manual work. Count the flows, maps and partner connections before choosing a destination.

What a deployment requires

Set up monitoring, alerting, retry, dead-letter handling and replay before connecting the second wave of systems.

In the proof of concept, run three of your hardest real flows: one event-driven, one high-volume batch sync and one that spans three or more systems. Then make them fail. Send a malformed payload, take a target offline mid-run and revoke a credential. Check whether the platform alerts, retries and lets you replay cleanly.

Plan for the work the license does not cover: connector maintenance when SaaS vendors change their APIs, extra environments for development and testing, and the staff time to run the platform. Price the third year, not only the first.

If business teams will build their own integrations, set role-based access, environment separation and a review path before you open the platform to them.

Questions to settle first

Settle these before writing the shortlist.

  • Who will build and own the integrations: a central team, business analysts or product engineers?
  • Is the work high-volume B2B/EDI and API-led services, or a long tail of SaaS-to-SaaS automations?
  • Which of today's flows run on BizTalk, SAP Process Orchestration or other middleware with a support end date?
  • Which integrations will AI agents be allowed to call, and how will those calls be governed and logged?
  • What does the bill look like in year three at your projected flow count and volume?
