Why Product Data Isn't Flat

A Bill of Materials isn't a list attached to a Product — it's a recursive hierarchy where a Component can itself be a sub-assembly with its own BOM, and the same part can appear at different quantities in multiple parent assemblies, which is a self-referencing many-to-many relationship generic models rarely get right. Engineering Change Orders make it harder still: a single ECO can revise multiple BOMs at once, and every affected entity — Product, Component, BOM — needs Revision as a first-class attribute, not an afterthought, or your model can't answer which version shipped to which customer. Generic templates also collapse "Product" and "Unit" into one entity, but high-tech manufacturers need them separate: Product is the catalog-level design, while Unit is the specific serialized instance built from it, and warranty, RMA, and field service history all attach to the Unit, not the Product. Suppliers add a third dimension — an Approved Vendor List ties a specific Supplier to a specific Component at a specific revision, so "who can we buy this from" is really a three-way relationship, not a simple vendor lookup.
