Executive Summary
Fraud takes money from customers and the institution. Laundering failures bring regulatory action. The same data feeds both, and both teams work alerts.
Fraud detection stops criminals taking money from customers and the institution. Anti-money laundering (AML) detects criminals moving money through the institution and reports them to authorities. Both watch transactions and customer behavior, both produce alerts that people investigate, and both now use machine learning and AI agents. The identity verification guide covers checking who a customer is at onboarding; this guide covers watching what they do afterward.
The approaches differ by institution size and by which problem leads. Enterprise AML suites serve large banks with broad compliance programs. AI fraud platforms score transactions in real time. Transaction-monitoring specialists model behavior. Risk operations platforms serve fintechs with combined fraud and AML. Behavioral biometrics watch how users interact with devices. Entity resolution connects data to find networks.
Why Fraud and AML Detection Is a Separate Purchase
Regulators set deadlines and record-keeping duties that software must support. The eCFR text states that a bank is required to file a SAR no later than 30 calendar days after the date of initial detection of facts that may constitute a basis for filing a SAR. The eCFR text states that a bank shall maintain a copy of any SAR filed, and the supporting documentation, for a period of five years from the date of filing the SAR. Investigation speed and evidence quality therefore matter as much as detection.
European supervision is changing. AMLA says the AMLA Regulation, AML Regulation and 6th AML Directive were published in the Official Journal on 19 June 2024. AMLA lists directly supervising selected financial sector entities that operate on a cross-border basis and present high risk of money laundering and terrorism financing. Institutions in scope should ask vendors how their reporting and controls will support the new supervisor.
Broad AML programs need many functions in one place. SAS says SAS Anti-Money Laundering combines transaction monitoring, AI and machine learning, customer due diligence, entity resolution, investigation management and regulatory reporting. NICE Actimize describes putting the entity at the heart of all AML risk management processes.
Suite, Specialist, or Build on Your Own Models
Institutions choose among an enterprise suite covering fraud and AML, specialist products for one problem, or their own models on a data platform with a case management tool. Suites reduce integration and give one view of the customer. Specialists can be stronger at one problem. Building in-house gives control and demands data science and model risk management that examiners will review.
Combined platforms argue that fraud and AML share data. Feedzai says its RiskOps platform delivers a unified approach to fight fraud and financial crime across the entire customer lifecycle. Unit21 says it uses configurable AI agents on a unified fraud and AML platform to run the full financial crime lifecycle, from real-time detection to regulator-ready outcomes with a complete audit trail.
| Model | What you get | What you take on |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise AML suite | Monitoring, screening, cases and reporting | A large implementation and tuning effort |
| AI fraud platform | Real-time scoring across channels | AML coverage to confirm or add |
| Transaction-monitoring specialist | Behavioral models for fraud and AML | Integration with case management |
| Risk operations platform | Fraud and AML with AI agents for fintechs | Fit for large bank complexity |
| In-house models | Full control of models and data | Model risk management and staffing |
How do you evaluate AI Fraud & AML Detection?
Evaluate these products on your own transactions and known cases. The capabilities that decide results are real-time scoring, transaction monitoring, screening, entity resolution, behavioral signals, alert and case management, explainability, regulatory reporting, and model governance.
Behavior and identity add signals transactions lack. BioCatch says BioCatch Connect unites real-time telemetry, behavioral analysis and predictive intelligence to detect and prevent account opening fraud, account takeover, social engineering scams and mule accounts. Featurespace says The Featurespace Platform is deployed on premise or via fully hosted cloud in over 180 countries and can model and predict individual behavior in real time. Networks matter for laundering. Quantexa describes connecting fragmented data to reveal real-world relationships so humans and AI can make trusted decisions at scale.
| Capability | What it does | Buyer translation |
|---|---|---|
| Real-time scoring | Scores payments and logins as they happen | Ask about latency at your peak volumes. |
| Transaction monitoring | Finds suspicious patterns over time | Ask how scenarios and models are tuned. |
| Screening | Checks sanctions, PEP and watchlists | Ask about false positive rates on your data. |
| Entity resolution | Links records into people and networks | Finds mule networks and hidden links. |
| Behavioral signals | Device and interaction patterns | Helps with scams and account takeover. |
| Case management | Alerts, investigations and evidence | Ask how SAR narratives are drafted. |
| Explainability | Shows why a score or decision was made | Examiners will ask. |
| Model governance | Validation, monitoring and documentation | Ask what evidence the vendor provides. |
Vendors in AI Fraud & AML Detection
Representative vendors include BioCatch, Featurespace, Feedzai, NICE Actimize, Quantexa and Unit21. The list is alphabetical, is not a ranking, and is not for sale. How we choose vendors
The approaches below differ by institution size and which problem leads. Several vendors cover fraud and AML, so each approach describes where a product is strongest.
AI agents are moving from alert summaries to decisions. ComplyAdvantage says its agentic AI can resolve up to 85% of routine alerts autonomously while maintaining regulatory defensibility. Silent Eight says Iris 7 executes financial crime decisions within governed, policy-bound frameworks that are explainable, auditable and defensible under regulatory scrutiny. Lucinity says Luci, its AI Agent, automates and simplifies complex investigations. Ask each vendor which decisions its agents make alone, which need a person, and how examiners can review them.
| Vendor | Approach | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Feedzai | AI fraud platforms | RiskOps platform for fraud and financial crime |
| BioCatch | Behavioral biometrics | Behavioral signals against scams and mule accounts |
| NICE Actimize | Enterprise AML suites | Entity-centric AML and fraud for large institutions |
| Quantexa | Entity resolution and networks | Connected data and decision intelligence |
| Unit21 | Risk operations platforms | Fraud and AML with configurable AI agents |
| Featurespace | Transaction-monitoring specialists | Behavioral transaction monitoring |

How much should you budget for AI Fraud & AML Detection?
Fraud and AML software is priced by transaction or account volume, modules, deployment and services, and AI agents may add usage charges. Ask each vendor for the pricing unit, what drives growth, and the cost of tuning and model validation.
The value shows up in fraud losses prevented, investigation hours saved, fewer false positives that annoy customers, and fewer regulatory findings. Model it on your own loss and alert history.
| Meter | You are charged for | Grows with | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transaction volume | Transactions scored or monitored | Business growth | Peak volumes setting the tier |
| Accounts or customers | Customers monitored | Customer base | Dormant accounts counted |
| Modules | Fraud, monitoring, screening, cases | Scope | Case management sold separately |
| AI agents | Alerts or cases handled by agents | Alert volume | Agent charges on low-value alerts |
| Services | Implementation, tuning and validation | Complexity | Tuning left out of the quote |
How long does implementation take for AI Fraud & AML Detection?
Fraud and AML projects depend on data quality and model validation. Run new models alongside old ones before switching.
Connect transaction, customer and case data. Measure current detection, false positives and investigation time.
Run new models alongside existing ones. Compare outcomes on known cases and document the results for model validation.
Move channels or scenarios in stages. Tune thresholds with compliance and fraud teams.
Introduce AI agents for defined alert types with human review. Monitor models for drift and keep validation current.
