BigCommerce vs Shopify
BigCommerce and Shopify are both evaluated in the CIOPages Enterprise E-Commerce Platforms Buyer's Guide. The guide groups BigCommerce under Open SaaS and Shopify under SaaS Suite.
| Attribute | BigCommerce | Shopify (Plus & Commerce Components) |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Open SaaS | SaaS Suite |
| Best for | Mid-market and enterprise B2C/B2B brands wanting SaaS simplicity and predictable cost with an optional, low-friction headless path | D2C and B2C brands — and increasingly mid-market-to-enterprise retailers — that want speed, conversion, and low operational load with an optional headless path |
From the Enterprise E-Commerce Platforms Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 9 vendors evaluated.
BigCommerce
Open SaaS splits the difference deliberately: a managed, no-transaction-fee SaaS backend with open APIs, multi-storefront, and solid native B2B in B2B Edition, plus Catalyst as a Next.js headless reference storefront and the Makeswift acquisition adding a marketer-friendly visual editor — composable flexibility without standing up the whole stack yourself. The ecosystem and brand mindshare are smaller than Shopify’s or the enterprise incumbents’, deep and highly bespoke enterprise requirements can outgrow the SaaS guardrails, and as a public company its enterprise momentum is worth tracking.
Shopify (Plus & Commerce Components)
Fastest time-to-market and the strongest merchant and checkout experience in the category — Shop Pay, one-click — on a deep app ecosystem, with a credible enterprise story in Shopify Plus for managed scale, Hydrogen and Oxygen for React headless storefronts, and Commerce Components exposing 30+ enterprise APIs so brands can take pieces of Shopify into their own stack, validated by marquee wins such as Mattel. You operate inside Shopify’s guardrails: backend customization is more constrained than a true composable core, Shopify Payments and platform fees factor into TCO at GMV scale, and very complex contract and punchout scenarios can still favor B2B-native suites.
