Commvault

Depth is the argument for a regulated estate: the deepest heterogeneous workload and long-term-retention coverage, strong compliance and eDiscovery, and one policy framework spanning on-prem and cloud, with Metallic delivering the same protection as managed SaaS for teams that would rather not run infrastructure. It has historically carried an administration learning curve, packaging spans self-managed and SaaS so scoping the right edition takes care, and the breadth can be more than smaller estates need.

Rubrik

Backup framed as a security outcome, which is either the point or an expensive detour: built immutable-first, with ransomware investigation, sensitive-data discovery, and data-security-posture capabilities layered on top, plus a simple policy-driven UX and strong API automation. Pricing is premium relative to traditional backup, the security modules are where much of the value and the cost sit, and it is younger than the incumbents at the deepest, most exotic legacy workloads.
