Fiserv
Scale and in-store reach are the argument: one of the largest merchant acquirers and processors globally, the former First Data, pairing the enterprise Carat omnichannel platform with Clover for SMB and restaurant point-of-sale, on vast bank-channel reach and direct acquiring scale that make it a default for omnichannel enterprises and bank-referred merchants. Developer experience and API ergonomics trail the cloud-native PSPs. The portfolio spans many acquired platforms, so scoping the right product and integration path takes diligence, and pricing and contracts follow traditional acquirer norms rather than transparent self-serve.
Stripe
The broadest API surface in payments, with the best developer experience attached: payments, Billing, Connect for platforms, Treasury, and Issuing on one stack, acceptance tooling — network tokenization, AI-driven authorization optimization, optimized checkout — treated as a core focus, and an unmatched startup-to-enterprise growth path. Pricing is premium and often blended, so enterprises negotiate it down at volume. Treasury and reconciliation are less tailored than a dedicated acquirer’s, in-person and omnichannel coverage and deep local schemes trail the acquirer incumbents in some geographies, and support depth varies by tier.
