Fortinet vs Palo Alto Networks

Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks both sell next-generation firewalls as hardware appliances, virtual machines and cloud firewalls. Fortinet's FortiGate firewalls run FortiOS. Palo Alto Networks' firewalls run PAN-OS. This page compares them on hardware design, management, security subscriptions, virtual and cloud firewalls, SD-WAN and SASE, and models for small sites, and says which fits which situation.

Fortinet builds its own security processors into FortiGate appliances. Palo Alto Networks builds its firewalls on a single-pass architecture and uses custom chips in its data center models. Both vendors extend the firewall into SD-WAN and a cloud-delivered SASE service.

Prices and other facts are as of November 5, 2026. Vendors change prices; confirm them on the vendor’s own pricing page. Independent analysis: neither project nor any vendor named here paid for or reviewed this page.

How they compare

Compared on Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks product pages, documentation and the Fortinet product matrix of October 2026, as of November 2026.

Hardware design

Fortinet

FortiGate appliances use Fortinet's own ASICs, called Security Processing Units. The NP7 network processor speeds IPsec decryption, VXLAN termination and address translation. The CP9 content processor takes application identification, IPS and antivirus off the main CPU. The SP5 security processor puts network and content processing on one chip.

Palo Alto Networks

Palo Alto Networks firewalls use what it calls a Single Pass Parallel Processing (SP3) architecture. The PA-7500 chassis uses custom FE400 silicon. The PA-5500 Series uses custom FE400 and FE100X ASICs.

Fortinet puts its own processors across its appliances; Palo Alto Networks leads with its software design and adds custom chips in its data center models.

Operating system and management

Fortinet

FortiOS runs the firewall and Secure SD-WAN. FortiManager, or FortiManager Cloud, manages FortiGate hardware, VM and CNF form factors. It also manages FortiSwitch, FortiAP and FortiExtender, Secure SD-WAN and FortiSASE.

Palo Alto Networks

PAN-OS runs the firewalls. Panorama manages them centrally, and one high-availability pair manages up to 5,000 physical, virtual and container firewalls. Strata Cloud Manager applies a shared policy to firewalls and Prisma Access. Its Essentials tier is included at no cost for firewall and SASE customers. The Pro tier adds features.

FortiManager reaches Fortinet switches and access points; Strata Cloud Manager reaches Prisma Access.

Security subscriptions

Fortinet

FortiGuard services are sold one at a time or in three bundles. ATP covers IPS, antivirus, FortiSandbox SaaS, application control and inline CASB. UTP adds URL and DNS filtering, video filtering and anti-botnet. ENT adds DLP, attack surface monitoring, AI-based inline malware prevention and IoT detection. OT security is an extra service.

Palo Alto Networks

The documentation lists each service as its own subscription. Threat Prevention covers antivirus, anti-spyware and vulnerability protection. Advanced Threat Prevention, Advanced URL Filtering, DNS Security, Advanced DNS Security, Advanced WildFire and Device Security are listed separately. DNS Security requires a Threat Prevention license. URL Filtering is no longer sold as a standalone subscription. Its features are in Advanced URL Filtering.

Fortinet sells tiered bundles; Palo Alto Networks lists services one by one, so compare quotes line by line.

Virtual and cloud firewalls

Fortinet

FortiGate VM runs on VMware ESXi, vSphere and NSX-T, Hyper-V, KVM, Xen and Cisco CSP/ENCS, and in the major public clouds. It is licensed BYOL or on demand through cloud marketplaces. FortiGate-as-a-Service hosts FortiGate hardware, FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer in Fortinet data centers.

Palo Alto Networks

VM-Series runs in AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and private clouds. CN-Series protects Kubernetes, including GKE, EKS and AKS. Cloud NGFW for AWS and Cloud NGFW for Azure are fully managed services. Cloud NGFW for Azure is priced per hour plus per GB processed.

Palo Alto Networks runs a firewall service for you inside AWS and Azure; Fortinet hosts physical FortiGates for you in its own data centers.

SD-WAN and SASE

Fortinet

Secure SD-WAN runs on FortiOS and is managed from one console. Fortinet says it has no bandwidth licensing, data transfer charges or service tiering. FortiSASE runs on the same operating system with one agent, from more than 200 points of presence on Fortinet-owned infrastructure.

Palo Alto Networks

SD-WAN for NGFW requires an Advanced SD-WAN license on the firewall. It is managed from Panorama or Strata Cloud Manager and can use Prisma Access hubs. Prisma SD-WAN is a separate product on ION devices, licensed by bandwidth and deployment model.

Fortinet builds SD-WAN into FortiOS without bandwidth licensing; Palo Alto Networks licenses SD-WAN on its firewalls and also sells Prisma SD-WAN.

Models for small sites

Fortinet

Fortinet's October 2026 product matrix lists models from the desktop FortiGate 30G to the 16 RU FortiGate 7121F. Its desktop models come in Wi-Fi, DSL, PoE and cellular variants. The portfolio also includes ruggedized and bypass models.

Palo Alto Networks

The PA-500 Series is for remote branches and small offices, with 10G ports and a 330W PoE budget. The PA-1500 Series is for large branches. The PA-50R Series is ruggedized, with 5G cellular. The range runs up to the modular PA-7500 chassis.

Both run from small-office models to data center systems; Fortinet's desktop models include Wi-Fi, DSL and cellular variants.

Which one is faster?

Each vendor publishes throughput figures for its own models. Fortinet's Security Compute Rating compares its ASIC-based firewalls with CPU-based firewalls in the same price range. Test both with your own traffic and the security services you plan to turn on.

The quick read

Choose Fortinet when

  • you want SD-WAN, Wi-Fi and the firewall in one appliance at each branch
  • you want security services sold in three bundles
  • you want one licensing pool for virtual FortiGates and the services on your hardware

Choose Palo Alto Networks when

  • you want a firewall service in AWS or Azure that the vendor runs for you
  • you need a container firewall for Kubernetes clusters
  • you want one policy across your firewalls and Prisma Access

By situation

Many small branches that need a firewall, SD-WAN and Wi-Fi

Fortinet. SD-WAN runs on FortiOS, small FortiGates come in Wi-Fi variants, and FortiManager also manages FortiAP access points.

Firewalls in AWS or Azure without instances to manage

Palo Alto Networks. Cloud NGFW for AWS and Cloud NGFW for Azure are fully managed services.

East-west traffic between Kubernetes pods

Palo Alto Networks. CN-Series inspects traffic between pods in different trust zones and runs on GKE, EKS and AKS.

One licensing pool that moves between deployments

Either. FortiFlex points fund FortiGate VMs and services for FortiGate hardware, are charged daily and roll over. Software NGFW credits fund VM-Series, CN-Series, security services and virtual Panorama, on terms of 1 to 5 years.

Remote users under the same policy as the firewalls

Either. Strata Cloud Manager applies a shared policy to firewalls and Prisma Access. FortiManager manages FortiGates and FortiSASE with consistent policies.

Quick answers

Does Palo Alto Networks use custom chips?

Yes, in its data center models. The PA-7500 uses FE400 silicon. The PA-5500 Series uses FE400 and FE100X ASICs.

Is SD-WAN a separate license on either firewall?

On Palo Alto Networks firewalls, yes: SD-WAN needs an Advanced SD-WAN license. Fortinet says Secure SD-WAN has no bandwidth licensing or service tiering.

How are the cloud firewalls billed?

FortiGate VM is BYOL or on demand through cloud marketplaces, and FortiFlex offers points-based usage licensing. VM-Series is BYOL or pay-as-you-go with Software NGFW credits. Cloud NGFW for Azure is priced per hour plus per GB processed and can use existing Azure credits.
