From the Source Code Management & DevOps Platforms Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 8 vendors evaluated.

Gitea

Light enough to run on modest hardware, which is exactly the point: a fast, self-hosted Git service with low operational overhead and an all-in-one open-source feature set spanning code review, packages, and CI/CD via Actions, plus a commercial path through CommitGo’s Gitea Cloud and Gitea Enterprise, which adds SAML, audit logging, mandatory 2FA, and dependency scanning for teams wanting vendor support. The 2022 move of the Gitea trademark and domains to a for-profit entity fractured community trust and spawned the Forgejo fork. Native supply-chain security and AI are thinner than the major platforms’, and very large or compliance-heavy estates may outgrow it without the Enterprise edition.

GitLab

The whole DevSecOps surface in a single application, with the strongest self-managed story here: repos, CI/CD, security scanning, and package registry under one policy and audit surface, with air-gapped and sovereign deployment options, GitLab Duo agentic AI that can run against self-hosted models for data-residency-sensitive teams, and an open-core model with public transparency. That breadth carries a steeper learning and administration curve, the richest security and compliance features sit in the top Ultimate tier, and the marketplace is smaller than GitHub’s. GitLab explored a sale in 2024–25, with Datadog reported as interested, though it remains an independent, publicly traded company.
