Mimecast vs Proofpoint
Mimecast and Proofpoint are both evaluated in the CIOPages Email Security & Anti-Phishing Buyer's Guide. The guide groups Mimecast under Platform Suite and Proofpoint under Gateway + API.
| Attribute | Mimecast | Proofpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Platform Suite | Gateway + API |
| Best for | Mid-to-large enterprises that need security, archiving, DMARC, and awareness consolidated into one platform and contract | Large, regulated enterprises wanting gateway, behavioral, DLP, and compliance depth from a single established vendor |
From the Email Security & Anti-Phishing Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 8 vendors evaluated.
Mimecast
One contract for security, archiving, DMARC, and awareness is the pitch, and for a mid-to-large enterprise it lands: an AI-driven gateway surrounded by collaboration security, brand and DMARC protection, tamper-resistant archiving and e-discovery, and security-awareness training, deepened by the 2024 Code42 and Aware acquisitions into human-risk management, with mature Microsoft 365 integration, URL rewriting, and attachment sandboxing. Recognized in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant. Its gateway heritage shows: MX-record deployment and more configuration than an API-only tool, UI and behavioral detection that have trailed the AI-native entrants, spam and sandbox features increasingly overlapping native Microsoft protection, and Permira ownership since the 2022 take-private.
Proofpoint
The deepest enterprise heritage in the category, with the portfolio to match: people-centric targeting through Very Attacked Person analysis, supplier and vendor risk scoring, Nexus AI/LLM detection, strong DLP, compliance archiving, and now Adaptive Email Security — an API-based, post-delivery behavioral layer for Microsoft 365 with retroactive clawback — alongside the pre-delivery gateway. Full value assumes you buy well beyond core filtering into DLP, archiving, and the adaptive layer, at premium pricing across a broad and sometimes overlapping portfolio. Migrating off the legacy SEG architecture takes planning, and it has sat under private-equity (Thoma Bravo) ownership since the 2021 take-private.
