pgvector vs Qdrant
pgvector and Qdrant are both evaluated in the CIOPages Vector Database & AI Search Buyer's Guide. The guide groups pgvector under Embedded in Postgres and Qdrant under Filtering & Rust.
| Attribute | pgvector (PostgreSQL) | Qdrant |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Embedded in Postgres | Filtering & Rust |
| Best for | Teams already running PostgreSQL who want semantic search and RAG without adding infrastructure — the right default for most sub-10M-vector workloads | Workloads that mix vector similarity with heavy structured filtering — recommendations, personalization, multi-tenant RAG — where filtered-ANN quality is the deciding factor |
From the Vector Database & AI Search Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 8 vendors evaluated.
pgvector (PostgreSQL)
The right default for most sub-10M-vector workloads, and it costs nothing: a free, open-source extension adding vector columns and HNSW and IVFFlat indexes to PostgreSQL, so embeddings live beside relational data in one store, one transaction, and one backup — no sync pipeline, no second system — available on every major managed Postgres, with pgvectorscale adding a streaming DiskANN index to push scale and lower memory. Native indexes are best up to a few million vectors before tuning gets demanding, pre-filtering with ANN is weaker than purpose-built engines and can dent recall under selective filters, and very large or high-QPS vector workloads still favor a dedicated platform. Good performance needs real Postgres expertise.
Qdrant
Filtered search is where it separates itself: an Apache-2.0 engine written in Rust with a reputation for memory efficiency, where metadata filtering is integrated into traversal rather than bolted on, so recall holds under selective filters, with recent releases pushing quantization hard through TurboQuant-class compression and low-memory modes, and Qdrant Cloud offering managed deployment on AWS, GCP, and Azure behind fresh growth funding. The enterprise install base and partner ecosystem are smaller than the incumbents’, there are fewer batteries-included extras — no native vectorizer modules, so you bring your own embeddings — and the advanced tuning and quantization knobs reward teams willing to learn them.
