Sanity vs Contentful
Sanity and Contentful are both evaluated in the CIOPages Headless & Composable CMS Buyer's Guide. The guide groups Sanity under Programmable Content and Contentful under API-First Headless.
| Attribute | Sanity | Contentful |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Programmable Content | API-First Headless |
| Best for | Developer-led organizations that want to treat content as data and build bespoke, real-time content workflows rather than accept a fixed CMS UI | Enterprises wanting the most established API-first content core to anchor a composable, multi-channel stack, especially Salesforce-aligned ones |
From the Headless & Composable CMS Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 8 vendors evaluated.
Sanity
The most programmable platform here, and that is a real architectural stance: a React-based, fully customizable Studio, the GROQ query language, and a structured Content Lake make it infrastructure for building content applications rather than a fixed editor, with a Live Content API delivering real-time updates without cache purges and Canvas plus Agent Actions bringing AI-assisted authoring. Its power is its cost of entry. Tailoring the Studio and writing GROQ assume real developer investment, so a marketer-only team will find it far less turnkey than the visual-first rivals, and the deep customization is something you own and maintain. As with all pure headless, personalization and analytics live outside it.
Contentful
Contentful is the de facto enterprise content backbone and the pioneer of the category: a clean API-first content model, a strong app framework and marketplace, Studio for visual editing on headless front ends, and Ninetailed-based personalization folded in, with the broadest enterprise footprint and partner ecosystem of the pure-play vendors and inaugural MACH Alliance membership. The live question is ownership — it agreed in 2026 to be acquired by Salesforce to power Agentforce, deal pending close, so weigh the roadmap and the tighter Salesforce gravity that follows. It is a content platform, not a DXP, so personalization, search, and analytics are yours to assemble, and usage-based limits on API calls, records, roles, and environments need modeling at enterprise scale.
