Why Formula-Based Manufacturing Breaks Generic Models

Chemical manufacturing runs on formulas, not bills of materials — ingredients combine by ratio or percentage, yield varies by batch, and a single process order can produce multiple co-products and by-products at once, none of which fits a discrete-manufacturing model built around fixed quantities and one output per order. Batch genealogy has to trace which specific lots of raw material went into which batch and, from there, into which finished-goods lot — a many-to-many lineage relationship, not a simple parent-child link, and one that regulatory recalls depend on getting right. A single substance can carry multiple identifiers — internal material code, CAS number, UN number — and multiple hazard classifications depending on concentration or the mixture it's part of, so "Material" can't be modeled as one flat entity with one classification. Specifications often exist at two layers, a standard grade spec and customer-specific variants of it, which a generic "Product" entity has no room for.
