Health Insurance Value Streams

About This Value Stream Map

This is a complete set of value stream maps for a health insurance organization, covering 34 end-to-end flows across underwriting and pricing, member enrollment, provider network management, claims adjudication, utilization management, and risk adjustment and quality reporting. It's delivered as an editable PowerPoint deck in which every flow is broken into stages, each with its activities, inputs, and outputs defined, so the maps can flex to a specific line of business — group commercial, individual exchange, or Medicare Advantage.

Why the Handoffs Are Easy to Get Backwards

Health insurance value streams fork earlier and more often than a generic sequence assumes. Underwriting and pricing split at the top by market: group, individual exchange, and Medicare Advantage each run on different risk-pooling logic and regulatory timing, so there's no single "underwrite a policy" flow that applies across all three. Claims adjudication forks again by claim type, with pharmacy claims often routing through a separate PBM relationship entirely rather than the medical claims engine, which most generic outputs collapse into one box. Provider network contracting and credentialing also have to complete as their own long-cycle flow before a claim can adjudicate against that provider at all, a precedence that's easy to state and easy to get backwards. And utilization management sits as a gate between care delivery and claims payment that can loop a claim back for review, so the real flow has a feedback path a straight-line diagram won't show.

What This Includes

34 end-to-end value stream flows covering underwriting and pricing, member enrollment by channel, provider network contracting and credentialing, claims adjudication, utilization management and prior authorization, and risk adjustment and quality reporting. Every flow is mapped stage by stage in PowerPoint with the activities, inputs, and outputs at each stage, and the deck is fully editable so you can adapt it to your lines of business and regulatory footprint.

Common Uses

  • Baseline current-state operations before a core administration or claims platform implementation
  • Map where prior authorization and utilization management create feedback loops into the claims flow
  • Align enrollment, underwriting, and claims teams on handoffs that differ by line of business
  • Brief new operations or compliance staff on how the business runs end to end, not just their own function

Built For

Operations, IT, and compliance leaders at health plans and managed care organizations, plus consultants supporting core system implementations or operating model redesign in health insurance.
