Investment Banking Capabilities Model

A 400+ capability reference model for investment banks, structured around M&A advisory, underwriting, and trading — and the information barriers separating them — not retail banking's deposit-and-loan model.

Investment Banking Capabilities Model

About This Capability Model

A detailed, multi-level capability map for the Investment Banking sector, covering 400+ business capabilities organized across three hierarchical levels. The capability set is organized around the capital-markets transaction model — M&A advisory, underwriting, and trading — which has nothing to do with the deposit-and-lending business most people picture when they hear the word "bank."

Why a capability model, not a prompt

Investment banking is where a generic AI prompt does the most damage, because the word "bank" pulls in exactly the wrong mental model: investment banks don't take deposits or make consumer loans, they advise on mergers, underwrite securities, and trade capital markets instruments, and a prompt for "investment bank capabilities" will often drift toward retail-banking capabilities — account management, loan servicing — that simply don't exist on this side of the business. It also tends to flatten "compliance" into one generic bucket, when in reality investment banks operate under a specific structural requirement — information barriers (the "Chinese wall") separating research, banking deal teams, and trading desks — that exists precisely because these businesses sit inside one firm and must be kept informationally apart under FINRA and SEC rules. A generic list also won't distinguish "M&A Advisory" from "Equity Capital Markets Underwriting" from "Debt Capital Markets Origination" as the genuinely separate capabilities they are inside a coverage-group and product-group deal structure — it will just say "provide banking services." This model is built around how deal teams, underwriting desks, and trading floors are actually structured and regulated, not around a retail-banking template with "investment" added to the name.

What's Inside

  • Capability Map — 400+ capabilities across three levels, from Level 1 domains like M&A Advisory, Underwriting, and Sales & Trading down to granular Level 3 capabilities, in PowerPoint, Word, and Excel
  • Capability Definitions — plain-language definitions for every capability, from "Structure a Leveraged Buyout Financing" to "Maintain Information Barriers Between Research and Banking"
  • Capability KPIs — the metrics investment banks track per capability, including league table ranking, deal fee realization, and underwriting risk exposure

How Teams Use It

  • Benchmark deal-team capabilities — industry coverage bankers versus product specialists in ECM, DCM, and leveraged finance — against where deal flow is actually moving
  • Map the specific capabilities that keep research, banking, and trading separated under FINRA/SEC information-barrier rules, ahead of a regulatory exam or after a breach
  • Reconcile two banks' coverage groups, underwriting desks, and trading platforms into one operating model after a boutique or platform acquisition
  • Stand up a new capability line — entering leveraged finance, equity capital markets, or private capital markets — around a defined capability set instead of around whoever was just hired

Who It's For

Heads of investment banking coverage groups, capital markets technology leaders, compliance officers responsible for information barriers and research independence, and M&A integration leads at bulge-bracket, mid-market, and boutique investment banks.
