Value Streams

Sustainability Value Streams: AI-Ready Edition

12 sustainability value streams in 60 stages, each shown today and AI-native, with its target AI mode and human checkpoint

What this value stream set is for

These value streams show how one function's work runs from the trigger to the result, stage by stage, as it runs today and as it could run with AI. Each stage names the target AI mode, the agents involved and the checkpoint that stays with a person.

Teams use them to decide where AI goes in the work, to plan process redesign stage by stage, and to tie each stage to the capabilities that enable it.

About These Value Streams

The Sustainability Value Streams: AI-Ready Edition is for CIOs, architects and transformation leads who need to see how sustainability work runs from trigger to value, and where AI belongs in it. It covers 12 value streams in 60 stages. Each stage is shown as it runs today and as it could run with AI, with the target AI mode, the agents involved and the human checkpoint that stays with a person. It is the value-stream part of Business Architecture for Sustainability: AI Transformation Blueprint, sold on its own.

What's Inside

The same 12 value streams come in three files: a deck to present, a workbook to work in and a guide to read. The workbook holds every field; the deck shows each stage as it runs today and AI-native, with its AI mode and human checkpoint.

  • 12 sustainability value streams and their 60 stages, each with its steps, stakeholders, entry and exit criteria, and the capabilities that enable it
  • For every stage: today's pain points, the AI-native future state, the agents involved, the target AI mode, the human checkpoint and KPIs
  • 15 standard sustainability value streams with their steps, as a reference process view
  • The Value Streams deck (PowerPoint): every value stream as a flow, then stage by stage
  • The workbook (Excel): the value streams and every stage, in sheets you can filter and extend
  • The guide (Word): the scales used at each stage (AI mode, human oversight, risk tier and work pattern), every value stream in prose, and the license
  • Free corrections, and new versions free for 180 days

Every file names your organization and carries your license ID.

The 12 Value Streams

Each value stream runs from a trigger to the value it delivers. The list gives that value and the number of stages.

  • Stakeholder Expectations to Approved Sustainability Strategy (5 stages): A sustainability strategy aimed at the topics where the organization has the greatest effect and that most affect its business, built into business unit plans and funded through one program budget.
  • Target Proposal to Committed Target (5 stages): A target the organization can meet and defend, with a stated baseline, scope, method and time frame, approved by the Chief Sustainability Officer and cascaded to named owners who track it.
  • Reporting Period to Emissions Inventory (5 stages): A complete, checked emissions inventory covering the organization's operations, the energy it buys and its value chain, with every value traceable to its source and labeled measured, estimated or modeled, accepted by the Chief Sustainability Officer and handed to Finance's reporting process.
  • Reduction Opportunity to Delivered Reduction (5 stages): Lower emissions and energy cost from measures chosen for what they reduce per unit of cost, delivered with the sites and functions that carry them out and measured after delivery.
  • Resource Baseline to Circular Operations (5 stages): Operations that use less water and material, reuse and recover more, and protect the environment around their sites, with lower resource cost and risk and waste confirmed to reach the destinations reported.
  • Climate Hazard to Adapted Operations (5 stages): Sites, supply and plans adapted to the climate hazards and transition changes the organization faces, with significant climate risks carried into enterprise risk management and fewer surprises for leadership.
  • Residual Emissions to Retired Carbon Credits (5 stages): Carbon credits of assessed quality, bought within an approved policy, retired in the organization's name and supporting one accurate claim each, with reduction of its own emissions kept first.
  • Product Brief to Lower-Impact Product (5 stages): A product that meets the organization's sustainability criteria, with a released footprint, an end-of-life route and environmental claims whose substance is approved before marketing publishes them.
  • Sourcing Requirement to Responsible Supplier (5 stages): A supply base that carries less environmental and social risk, with clear requirements, assessments that feed Supply Chain's reviews, corrective actions followed to closure and persistent failures referred to Supply Chain, which decides.
  • Value Chain Concern to Remedy (5 stages): Value chain workers who can raise a concern safely and be heard, harm put right for the people affected, and risks to people found and addressed before they recur.
  • Community Need to Lasting Partnership (5 stages): Partnerships and programs that communities help shape and that deliver measured outcomes, concerns from community members resolved and answered, and trust where the organization operates.
  • Reporting Cycle to Published Disclosure (5 stages): Approved sustainability disclosures prepared with Finance's reporting process and ready for assurance, with every statement traced to its evidence and every estimate labeled, so the organization can stand behind what it publishes.

Who Uses It

Process owners and the teams who redesign sustainability work, transformation leads who need a future-state process view to plan from, and business architects who map value streams to capabilities.

How It Fits With the Other Products

Each stage names the capabilities that enable it; they are defined in the Sustainability Capability Model: AI-Ready Edition. The agents each stage involves are specified in Business Architecture for Sustainability: AI Transformation Blueprint, which also holds the business data model, use cases, controls, an operating model and a roadmap. The Sustainability Business Data Model is sold on its own too.

Target AI modes describe a typical large enterprise and are a starting point for your own.
