About This Tool

Technical debt accumulates silently and compounds over time. Left unmanaged, it slows delivery, increases operational risk, and eventually forces costly emergency remediation. This tool uses the classic Impact/Effort Matrix to help you make rational, defensible prioritization decisions.

How to use it: Add your technical debt items (we've pre-loaded 5 examples to get you started). For each item, rate its Business Impact (1–10: how much does this debt hurt the business?) and Remediation Effort (1–10: how hard is it to fix?). The tool plots each item on a scatter matrix and categorizes it into one of four quadrants.

How to Interpret Your Results

Quick Wins
High impact, low effort β€” address these first. They deliver the most value per dollar spent.
Strategic Investments
High impact, high effort β€” plan and fund these properly. They are worth the investment but require dedicated resources.
Fill-Ins
Low impact, low effort β€” tackle these when capacity allows. Good for junior team members or slow periods.
Thankless Tasks
Low impact, high effort β€” deprioritize or eliminate. Consider accepting the risk rather than investing resources.
