ApproachData IntelligenceData Governance
Best forEnterprises that want analyst-driven discovery and active, usage-aware metadata as the foundation for self-service and trusted AILarge, regulated enterprises whose project is driven by auditors, stewardship, and provable policy — not primarily by discovery speed

From the Data Catalog & Metadata Management Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 7 vendors evaluated.

Alation

The original behavioral-metadata catalog, and the usage signal is still what sets it apart: it mines query logs to surface what people actually use and who the de-facto experts are, pairs that with strong natural-language search and deep BI-tool integration, and has re-platformed around its Agentic Data Intelligence Platform with the ALLIE AI assistant, agent-driven documentation and policy enforcement, an AI Agent SDK, and MCP support after acquiring Numbers Station in 2025. Pricing is premium and climbs with users and sources. Governance and stewardship depth is real but not as exhaustive as Collibra’s for the heaviest regulatory programs, and the recent agentic rebuild means confirming which capabilities are GA versus roadmap.

Collibra

Buy it when auditors, stewardship, and provable policy drive the project rather than discovery speed: the most complete stewardship and policy workflow in the category, a mature business glossary, data-quality lineage, and audit-ready compliance reporting, now extended toward AI governance and context after the 2025 acquisition of Deasy Labs, from an independent Brussels-based vendor and a perennial Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader. Implementation weight is the trade-off: rollouts are involved and demand committed data-governance staffing. Discovery UX has historically trailed the collaboration-first catalogs though it is modernizing, and the value is hard to realize without an operating model that sustains stewardship.

ApproachCatalog & CultureGovernance Suite
Best forAnalytics-driven organizations that want adoption and self-service discovery first, with governance layered on rather than imposedLarge, regulated enterprises building a formal governance program with real stewardship, policy, and AI-governance requirements

From the Data Governance & Catalog Platforms Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 8 vendors evaluated.

Alation

Adoption is the strategy here: it pioneered the modern data catalog and is still strongest on search, discovery, and a “data culture” experience analysts genuinely adopt, with behavioral intelligence surfacing the data people actually use, so governance layers on rather than being imposed. It has pivoted hard to agentic AI — the catalog reframed as a governed knowledge layer for agents, with Numbers Station acquired to build AI-native data workflows on governed metadata. Governance, policy, and quality depth stay lighter than the full suites unless you add modules, the agentic platform is new enough to be worth probing for maturity, and pricing reflects the enterprise positioning.

Collibra

The reference platform when governance is a formal, business-led program: deep business glossary, policy, and stewardship workflow, now unified with data quality and observability that pushes rules down into Snowflake, Databricks, and BigQuery, plus a dedicated AI Governance module registering models, agents, and use cases with lineage mapped to the EU AI Act and NIST AI RMF. It is still independent, and tuck-ins — Husprey, the Raito data-access acquisition — extend analytics and access governance. Expect one of the more involved and premium platforms to stand up, and expect value to depend on an operating model and stewards already being in place. Catalog automation and time-to-value historically lagged the newer active-metadata entrants, though that gap is closing.
