AWS API Gateway vs Kong
AWS API Gateway and Kong are both evaluated in the CIOPages API Management Platform Buyer's Guide. The guide groups AWS API Gateway under AWS Native and Kong under Cloud-Native.
| Attribute | AWS API Gateway | Kong (Konnect) |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | AWS Native | Cloud-Native |
| Best for | AWS-native organizations with serverless architectures and internal API use cases | Cloud-native, Kubernetes-first organizations prioritizing performance and deployment flexibility |
From the API Management Platform Buyer's Guide, updated March 2026. 5 vendors evaluated.
AWS API Gateway
AWS-only, and that is the whole decision: deepest AWS integration, serverless pay-per-request deployment, HTTP API for cost-optimized routes, and native Lambda and Step Functions wiring. The developer portal is limited, analytics require CloudWatch configuration, and multi-cloud or hybrid architectures are out.
Kong (Konnect)
The highest-performance gateway here, and you pay for it in operations: sub-millisecond latency, Kubernetes-native, a strong open-source community, an excellent plugin ecosystem, and Konnect’s SaaS control plane over hybrid data planes. The developer portal and analytics are less mature than Apigee’s and MuleSoft’s, enterprise governance needs Konnect Enterprise, and it asks more operational investment than fully-managed alternatives.
