Barracuda

Priced and shaped for the mid-market, and honest about it. Email Gateway Defense covers the inline layer, API-based Impersonation Protection (the former Sentinel) learns each user’s communication patterns to flag BEC and account takeover, and both deploy in minutes with no MX change, alongside automated incident response and awareness training through a strong mid-market and managed-service-provider channel. Threat intelligence and brand depth sit below the largest enterprise incumbents, the suite spans several modules to scope and license, and the economics stop working in the largest, most complex estates. KKR-owned since 2022.

Proofpoint

The deepest enterprise heritage in the category, with the portfolio to match: people-centric targeting through Very Attacked Person analysis, supplier and vendor risk scoring, Nexus AI/LLM detection, strong DLP, compliance archiving, and now Adaptive Email Security — an API-based, post-delivery behavioral layer for Microsoft 365 with retroactive clawback — alongside the pre-delivery gateway. Full value assumes you buy well beyond core filtering into DLP, archiving, and the adaptive layer, at premium pricing across a broad and sometimes overlapping portfolio. Migrating off the legacy SEG architecture takes planning, and it has sat under private-equity (Thoma Bravo) ownership since the 2021 take-private.
