Checkmarx vs Sonar
Checkmarx and Sonar are both evaluated in the CIOPages DevSecOps & Application Security Testing Buyer's Guide. The guide groups Checkmarx under Enterprise AST and Sonar under Quality + Security.
| Attribute | Checkmarx | Sonar (SonarQube) |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Enterprise AST | Quality + Security |
| Best for | Large, regulated enterprises needing the deepest SAST/SCA, policy governance, and an on-prem deployment option | Teams that want quality and security in one developer-facing gate, especially to govern AI-generated code |
From the DevSecOps & Application Security Testing Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 8 vendors evaluated.
Checkmarx
Buy Checkmarx for depth and governance, not for the developer’s morning. One of the deepest SAST engines with broad language coverage now sits inside the Checkmarx One cloud platform, spanning SAST, SCA, DAST, API security, IaC, secrets, container, and supply-chain scanning under an ASPM control plane, with strong policy-as-code gates, regulatory reporting, and a self-managed CxSAST option for on-prem and air-gapped estates; FedRAMP High Ready as of late 2025. The trade shows up in operations: historically heavier to tune, longer scans on very large codebases, deep configuration to reach low false-positive rates, and custom, sales-led enterprise pricing.
Sonar (SonarQube)
Sonar reaches AppSec from the other direction, through the developer’s daily feedback loop, which is why it lands where security tools usually do not: broad language coverage, low-false-positive SAST with taint analysis, CI/CD quality gates, and a free self-hosted Community edition. 2025 added SonarQube Advanced Security — SCA, SBOM, malicious-package detection — and AI Code Assurance, which flags AI-generated code and applies stricter checks to it. Security is still the newer half of the product: SCA and secrets are catching up to dedicated AppSec tools, there is no native DAST, and per-lines-of-code pricing scales with codebase size rather than team size, which is cheap for a small team on a big monorepo and expensive in reverse. SonarQube Server is yours to operate.
