From the Log Management & Analysis Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 8 vendors evaluated.

Elastic

Maximum search flexibility, and you pay for it in operations: the reference index-heavy engine for fast, flexible full-text search and analytics over logs, with Elasticsearch and Kibana back under an OSI-approved open-source license, AGPL, alongside Elastic License v2 since 2024, mature hot, warm, cold, and frozen data tiering with searchable snapshots keeping long retention affordable, ES|QL simplifying querying, and one platform spanning logs, security, and search. Self-managing Elasticsearch at scale demands real operational expertise — cluster sizing, sharding, and upgrades are not trivial, and free open source becomes an engineering line item. Elastic Cloud is competitive but grows with data, some security and ML features sit in paid tiers, and the 2021 license history left lingering caution and the AWS-backed OpenSearch fork as an alternative.

Splunk (Cisco)

The most mature enterprise log platform, and priced accordingly: the deepest query language in SPL, a vast app and integration ecosystem, and the strongest security analytics and SIEM story in the category, with Cisco ownership since the deal closed in March 2024 adding network telemetry and a path to tie logs into the broader Cisco security and observability portfolio, and workload SVC pricing offering an alternative to pure per-GB ingest for estates full of rarely-searched data. It sits at the premium end on cost, and licensing is genuinely complex — ingest versus workload pricing is a decision in itself. Deployment and tuning reward certified expertise, migrating a large on-prem estate to Splunk Cloud is a real project, and how Cisco continues to integrate and package the portfolio is worth tracking.
