Google ADK vs LangGraph
Google ADK and LangGraph are both evaluated in the CIOPages AI Agent & Agentic AI Platforms Buyer's Guide. The guide groups Google ADK under Open + Managed and LangGraph under Code-First.
| Attribute | Google ADK / Vertex Agent Engine | LangChain / LangGraph |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Open + Managed | Code-First |
| Best for | Google Cloud organizations wanting an open framework for portability plus a managed, governed runtime for production deployment | Engineering-led teams building custom, controllable multi-agent systems that need durable state and deep observability without ceding the runtime to a hyperscaler |
From the AI Agent & Agentic AI Platforms Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 8 vendors evaluated.
Google ADK / Vertex Agent Engine
Two parts, open and managed: the open-source Agent Development Kit in Python, TypeScript, Go, and Java for code-first multi-agent design with native A2A, and the fully managed Vertex AI Agent Engine runtime — now part of the rebranded Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform — for deploying, scaling, and governing agents with built-in testing and reliability, model-agnostic through Model Garden and its 200+ models despite Gemini optimization. Google’s agent stack has been a moving target, with Vertex AI, Agentspace, and the Gemini API consolidating under one brand, so naming and surfaces are still settling, and the deepest value — managed runtime, governance, data integration — lands inside Google Cloud.
LangChain / LangGraph
The de facto standard for controllable, stateful agents: LangGraph 1.0, out since Oct 2025, is a low-level graph runtime with durable execution, built-in checkpointing and persistence, and first-class human-in-the-loop pauses, while LangSmith adds best-in-class tracing, evals, and a managed deployment tier, over a huge ecosystem of tool and model integrations and a model-agnostic stance with native MCP support. The broader LangChain abstractions carry real learning curve and churn, and teams routinely debate using LangGraph directly versus the higher-level wrappers. The best-value observability lives in paid LangSmith tiers, and the power comes from explicit graph wiring — more upfront engineering than declarative frameworks.
