From the Business Intelligence & Analytics Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 10 vendors evaluated.

Sigma

A spreadsheet is the interface, and that is the whole argument: business users explore live warehouse data at scale with formulas they already know. Queries run directly against Snowflake, Databricks, and BigQuery with no extracts, so security and governance stay at the source and there is exactly one copy of the data, and the same surface increasingly runs governed data apps and AI agents. The design is cloud-only and warehouse-dependent, so it assumes a modern cloud-data-platform commitment and offers no on-prem path at all. It is younger and smaller than the incumbents, with a narrower partner and skills base; warehouse compute means cost governance shifts to query patterns; and visualization breadth is pragmatic rather than a strength.

Tableau (Salesforce)

Still the benchmark for visual, exploratory analysis, and analysts genuinely love working in it — a large community and public gallery behind them, Tableau Pulse watching metrics with AI. What you are evaluating now, though, is a strategy that has shifted into the Salesforce and Agentforce orbit: Tableau Next is a newer architecture with a Tableau Semantics layer and Agentforce-based skills — Concierge, Data Pro, Inspector — and it sits alongside classic Tableau rather than dropping in for it. Pricing is premium, governance and a formal semantic layer are still maturing against Looker, and the best value tilts toward Salesforce customers.
