Veracode

Binary and bytecode SAST is the capability that sets Veracode apart — scanning without source, which matters more than it sounds once third-party or legacy code is in scope. Around it sits a long-standing SaaS AST platform: strong DAST, SCA, package firewall, pen-testing-as-a-service, developer security training, Veracode Risk Manager for ASPM from the Longbow acquisition, and ML-based malicious-package detection from Phylum. Check two things before signing. Per-application pricing gets expensive across many microservices and repos, and the platform spans several acquired pieces, so confirm the parts you need integrate cleanly. The classic upload-and-scan model also feels less like working in the IDE than developer-first rivals do.

Sonar (SonarQube)

Sonar reaches AppSec from the other direction, through the developer’s daily feedback loop, which is why it lands where security tools usually do not: broad language coverage, low-false-positive SAST with taint analysis, CI/CD quality gates, and a free self-hosted Community edition. 2025 added SonarQube Advanced Security — SCA, SBOM, malicious-package detection — and AI Code Assurance, which flags AI-generated code and applies stricter checks to it. Security is still the newer half of the product: SCA and secrets are catching up to dedicated AppSec tools, there is no native DAST, and per-lines-of-code pricing scales with codebase size rather than team size, which is cheap for a small team on a big monorepo and expensive in reverse. SonarQube Server is yours to operate.
