Hedge Funds Business Information Model

About This Information Model

The Hedge Funds Business Information Model is a data entity map for fund operations — covering investor, fund structure, position, and performance data — organized into foundational, transactional, and informational layers and delivered as an editable Word document.

Where Generic Models Fall Apart

A hedge fund's "Fund" entity is rarely a single legal thing — master-feeder structures mean an investor subscribes into an onshore or offshore feeder, while positions, P&L, and risk actually live at the master fund level, and any model that treats "Fund" as one flat entity loses that structure entirely. Investors aren't customers placing orders; they hold Capital Accounts — running balances of contributions, withdrawals, and allocated P&L — and their relationship to the fund is governed by Subscriptions, Redemptions, lockups, and gates that can differ investor by investor. Side letters compound this: two investors in the same fund can operate under different fee terms, different reporting rights, or different liquidity terms, which means the Investor-to-Fund relationship isn't uniform the way a generic customer-product relationship would be. Fees themselves are computed per investor against high-water marks and hurdle rates that reset over time, so even "Fee" has to be modeled as a stateful entity tied to both the investor and the reporting period, not a flat transaction.

Inside the Model

  • Foundational entities — Fund, Fund Structure, Investor, Instrument, Counterparty, Prime Broker
  • Transactional entities — Subscription, Redemption, Trade, Position, Capital Call, Fee Calculation
  • Informational entities — NAV, Performance Attribution, Investor Reporting, Risk Exposure
  • Relationships linking the fund structure, investor base, and portfolio
  • Fully editable Word document

Where It Gets Used

  • Baseline for fund administration and investor reporting system design
  • Reference model when integrating portfolio, trading, and accounting platforms
  • Input to data warehouse and analytics architecture for performance and risk reporting
  • Shared vocabulary between fund operations, technology, and data teams during system selection

Built For

Data architects, business architects, and IT and operations leaders at hedge funds, fund administrators, and prime brokers who need an accurate starting entity model — one that reflects master-feeder structures and investor-specific terms — rather than a generic financial services template.
