Why a Policy Needs Four Roles, Not One
Life insurance data resists a generic model starting with who actually holds a policy — the Policyholder who owns it, the Insured whose life it covers, the Payor who pays the premiums, and the Beneficiary who receives the payout are frequently four different people (a parent owning a policy on a child, naming a sibling as beneficiary), so Party-to-Policy has to carry an explicit role, not a single owner field. Beneficiary designations also change over a policy's decades-long life and split by percentage across primary and contingent beneficiaries, so a claim has to resolve against the designation actually in effect at the date of death, which means beneficiary history needs to be modeled as a time-stamped record, not a current-state field. Riders compound the product model further — a single base policy can carry several riders (waiver of premium, accidental death, long-term care), each with its own coverage terms, cost, and effective dates layered on top of the base contract. And cash value itself is a running ledger, not a static number — premium payments, policy loans, partial withdrawals, and dividend reinvestment all post against it over the policy's life, so it behaves like an account with transaction history, not an attribute of the policy record.
