Property and Casualty Insurer Business Information Model

About This Information Model

This Business Information Model maps the data entities that run a property and casualty insurance business — underwriting, policy administration, claims, and reinsurance — organized into foundational, transactional, and informational categories. It sets out how those entities relate to one another across the policy and claims lifecycle, and it's delivered as an editable Word document you can adapt to your carrier's own lines of business.

Why the Entities Aren't as Clean as They Look

P&C insurance looks like it should fit a simple customer/product/order model, and that's exactly where most generic attempts go wrong. A policy isn't a static record — mid-term endorsements change coverage and premium, so the model needs effective-dated relationships that preserve what was actually in force on the date a claim occurred, not just the current state. A single claim can trigger multiple coverages within one policy at once — liability, collision, and medical payments off one accident — and a single catastrophe event can generate thousands of claims across many policies simultaneously, a many-to-many relationship a generic model won't anticipate. Reinsurance adds a layer most business models never touch at all: a policy's risk can be ceded across multiple treaties and retention layers, which calls for a secondary domain for ceded risk rather than a field on the policy. And "insured" and "risk" aren't the same entity — a single insured business can carry many risks, such as locations, vehicles, and equipment, each rated and covered on its own terms.

What's Inside

  • Foundational entities — Insured/Policyholder, Risk, Producer/Agent, Coverage, Rating Plan
  • Transactional entities — Policy, Endorsement, Premium, Claim, Loss, Reinsurance Cession
  • Informational entities — Loss Reserve, Catastrophe Event, Subrogation/Recovery, Underwriting Performance
  • Entity relationships spanning underwriting through claims and reinsurance
  • Delivered as a fully editable Word document

Where Teams Apply It

  • Scoping the data model for a policy administration, claims, or reinsurance system implementation
  • Aligning underwriting, claims, and actuarial teams on shared definitions ahead of a core systems replacement
  • Structuring master data for insureds, risks, and producers across multiple lines of business
  • Mapping how claims and reinsurance data need to relate before a catastrophe or reserving project

Built For

Data architects and business architects at P&C carriers and MGAs, IT leaders scoping policy or claims system replacements, and actuarial or underwriting leaders standardizing risk and policy data.
