Value Streams
Research and Development Value Streams: AI-Ready Edition
12 R&D value streams in 60 stages, each shown today and AI-native, with its target AI mode and human checkpoint
What this value stream set is for
These value streams show how one function's work runs from the trigger to the result, stage by stage, as it runs today and as it could run with AI. Each stage names the target AI mode, the agents involved and the checkpoint that stays with a person.
Teams use them to decide where AI goes in the work, to plan process redesign stage by stage, and to tie each stage to the capabilities that enable it.
About These Value Streams
The Research and Development Value Streams: AI-Ready Edition is for CIOs, architects and transformation leads who need to see how R&D work runs from trigger to value, and where AI belongs in it. It covers 12 value streams in 60 stages. Each stage is shown as it runs today and as it could run with AI, with the target AI mode, the agents involved and the human checkpoint that stays with a person. It is the value-stream part of Business Architecture for Research and Development: AI Transformation Blueprint, sold on its own.
What's Inside
The same 12 value streams come in three files: a deck to present, a workbook to work in and a guide to read. The workbook holds every field; the deck shows each stage as it runs today and AI-native, with its AI mode and human checkpoint.
- 12 R&D value streams and their 60 stages, each with its steps, stakeholders, entry and exit criteria, and the capabilities that enable it
- For every stage: today's pain points, the AI-native future state, the agents involved, the target AI mode, the human checkpoint and KPIs
- 11 standard R&D value streams with their steps, as a reference process view
- The Value Streams deck (PowerPoint): every value stream as a flow, then stage by stage
- The workbook (Excel): the value streams and every stage, in sheets you can filter and extend
- The guide (Word): the scales used at each stage (AI mode, human oversight, risk tier and work pattern), every value stream in prose, and the license
- Free corrections, and new versions free for 180 days
Every file names your organization and carries your license ID.
The 12 Value Streams
Each value stream runs from a trigger to the value it delivers. The list gives that value and the number of stages.
- Strategy to Funded Portfolio (5 stages): An R&D portfolio whose funded projects trace to stated goals, whose budget envelopes and roadmap are published with their assumptions, and whose leaders can see at any time what is funded, why, and how it is performing.
- Idea to Concept (5 stages): A steady flow of ideas judged consistently against stated criteria, submitters who hear what happened to their ideas, and concepts that start development with their need, feasibility and value understood.
- Technology Signal to Adoption (5 stages): Relevant technologies found early, assessed on their maturity, fit and rights position, and adopted, partnered for, licensed or watched by deliberate decision rather than by accident.
- Question to Research Insight (5 stages): Research that is planned, ethical and reproducible, with complete, attributable data and conclusions reviewed before the organization relies on them.
- Need to Released Design (5 stages): A released design baseline that meets traced requirements, including those that apply in each intended market, with its risks analyzed and its reviews closed.
- Prototype to Validated Design (5 stages): Evidence that the design meets each requirement and its users' needs, failures found and fixed before release, and a design confirmed ready for release on accepted results.
- Proposal to Project Closure (5 stages): R&D projects delivered to an approved plan, with risks, dependencies and changes managed openly and lessons that later projects actually use.
- Released Design to Market Launch (5 stages): A product that reaches the market on time with complete conformity evidence, a design handed to manufacturing and sustaining teams with its records and open issues, and sales and service teams ready to support it.
- Field Feedback to Product Retirement (5 stages): Products that keep working, improve on evidence, stay supportable and conform as requirements change, and are retired with their records kept.
- Invention to Protected IP (5 stages): Inventions captured before they are lost or disclosed, protection matched to their value, a portfolio kept current and paying for itself, and rights positions known before products launch.
- Partnership Opportunity to Collaboration Results (5 stages): Collaborations that provide what the organization lacks, on terms that protect its rights and data, with obligations met and results that are evaluated before the partnership continues.
- Technology to License Agreement (5 stages): Income from technology the organization does not use alone, access to technology it lacks, and licenses whose rights, obligations and royalties are tracked and reviewed over their life.
Who Uses It
Process owners and the teams who redesign R&D work, transformation leads who need a future-state process view to plan from, and business architects who map value streams to capabilities.
How It Fits With the Other Products
Each stage names the capabilities that enable it; they are defined in the Research and Development Capability Model: AI-Ready Edition. The agents each stage involves are specified in Business Architecture for Research and Development: AI Transformation Blueprint, which also holds the business data model, use cases, controls, an operating model and a roadmap. The Research and Development Business Data Model is sold on its own too.
Target AI modes describe a typical large enterprise and are a starting point for your own.
