AWS App Mesh vs Istio
AWS App Mesh and Istio are both evaluated in the CIOPages Service Mesh Buyer's Guide. The guide groups AWS App Mesh under Legacy — Migrate Off and Istio under Broadest Features.
| Attribute | AWS App Mesh | Istio |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Legacy — Migrate Off | Broadest Features |
| Best for | Only existing App Mesh users planning their exit — not a candidate for any new deployment in 2026 | Platform teams that need the full breadth of L7 traffic management and policy at scale — and increasingly evaluate ambient mode to get there without per-pod sidecars |
From the Service Mesh Buyer's Guide, updated June 2026. 6 vendors evaluated.
AWS App Mesh
Do not start new builds on it: AWS has set end of support for September 30, 2026 and already closed new-customer onboarding, so this is an exit plan rather than a candidate. What exists is an Envoy-based managed mesh for ECS, EKS, Fargate, and EC2 with tight IAM and CloudWatch integration, and for teams already running it the managed control plane removed some of the operational burden of self-hosting a mesh on AWS. Existing users should plan migration: AWS points ECS workloads to ECS Service Connect and EKS workloads to Amazon VPC Lattice, while a portable open-source mesh is the alternative if you want to avoid AWS-specific application networking.
Istio
The most feature-complete mesh, and ambient mode is the answer to its own reputation: a CNCF graduated project with genuinely vendor-neutral governance across Google, IBM, Microsoft, Red Hat, Solo.io, and Tetrate, built on the Envoy data plane, where ambient mode — GA since late 2024 — replaces the sidecar tax with a shared per-node Rust ztunnel for L4 mTLS and optional per-namespace Envoy waypoints adding L7 only where needed, enabling incremental adoption from zero mesh to secure overlay to full L7. Sidecar Istio is the category’s reference example of operational weight, with a control plane, CRDs, gateways, and a per-pod proxy lifecycle to manage. Ambient narrows that gap, but its multi-cluster, VM, and sidecar-interop paths matured after the core GA, so verify the status of what you need, and upstream support windows are short enough that serious users typically buy a commercial distribution.
