About Carina

Carina is an open-source Kubernetes CSI plugin designed to simplify and optimize storage management for stateful cloud-native applications. It enables enterprises to provision storage using standard Kubernetes resources such as StorageClass, PersistentVolumeClaim, and PersistentVolume, leveraging local disks intelligently partitioned by disk type. Carina addresses common challenges in distributed storage, including data replication inefficiencies and latency issues, by providing raw disk performance with extremely low overhead.

Targeted at enterprises running Kubernetes clusters with stateful workloads like modern databases and middleware, Carina enhances storage efficiency through features such as auto-tiering, RAID configuration, and node-aware scheduling. It allows administrators to combine high-capacity, low-performance disks with smaller, high-performance disks into unified storage classes, optimizing both capacity and performance. Additionally, Carina improves resilience by automatically detaching local volumes from pods when nodes fail, facilitating pod rescheduling and minimizing downtime.
