About Google Persistent Disk

Persistent Disk provides block storage for virtual machine instances. It offers HDD and SSD disk types. Both disk types can be sized up to 64 TB. Multiple persistent disks can be attached to Compute Engine or GKE instances simultaneously. Storage can be resized on the fly without disrupting applications.

• Regional Persistent Disk: Provides synchronous replication of data between two zones in the same region.
• Machine Images: Stores configuration, metadata, permissions, and data from one or more disks for a VM instance.
• Asynchronous Replication: Provides cross-region block storage replication for disaster recovery.

• Backing up data from zonal or regional Persistent Disks using snapshots
• Bringing up staging environments from production using disk clones
• Using temporary storage such as caches or scratch processing space
• Failing over data to a secondary region during a regional outage
• Deploying highly available apps using regional persistent disks
